Here
at Sedona Coffee Roasters we still carry on the
traditions of the Old West. We believe in common hospitality,
common sense and a good cup of coffee. And because new places
are a bit mysterious to visitors we hope you will find the
following information and local businesses helpful in your
visit to Sedona.
Sedona, Arizona is a unique and special place. The red rock formations that
surround Sedona, and including the Oak Creek Canyon challenge many National
Parks for awesome views and natural beauty. Northern Arizona is a geologists
dream.
Sedona still reflects the Old West and this
of course is a great part the local heritage and the overall
attraction to the area. Nearby is the Grand Canyon, Meteor
crater, The Hopi Nation, the Navajo Nation, the Four Corners
area, Canyon De Chelly, Chaco Canyon, Route 66, The Old Santa
Fe Railroad line and a thousand other sites and journeys.
Sedona is located in the high plateau desert
just south of the Colorado Plateau rim. Sedona enjoys mild
and sunny weather throughout the year. Sedona's elevation
is 4432 feet above sea level, yet the entire area has been
under the ocean at least seven (7) times in the geologic
past. The City of Sedona is located 90 minutes north of Phoenix,
and 40 minutes south of Flagstaff.
In October 1901, Theodore Schnebly arrived
in what is now the city of Sedona from their home in Gorin,
Missouri. with his wife, Sedona, and two children, Ellsworth
and Pearl. The few families living in the area at that time
were eager to have contact with the outside world, and welcomed
the Schnebleys.
Theodore Schnebly contacted
the U.S. Post Office Department and soon a post office was
approved. A name for the new post office station was requested,
to which the reply was "Schnebly Station". Theodore
was notified by the post office officials that the name was
too long to put on the cancellation stamp; therefore, a second
name was requested. Theodore's wife's name, Sedona, was suggested
and was approved by the Post Office officials on June 26,
1902. Theodore Schnebly was its first postmaster.
The City of Sedona was
incorporated in 1988 and is one of Arizona's premier tourism,
recreation, resort, retirement, and art centers, all of which
contribute to its economic base. Its history is that of a
rural ranching community. Sedona's beauty became known through
the motion picture industry which once seriously considered
Sedona as the home of the (then) "new" movie industry… Classic films
such as John Wayne's "The Angel and the Badman," and
Robert Mitchum's "Blood on the Moon" and many other "westerns" helped
to put Sedona on the map as a place to visit, and live. Today,
many television shows, commercials and movies are filmed
in the areas surrounding the city, and the community plays
host to over 5 million tourists each year from around the
world.
